Words Our Ajji Used

Ajji’s vocabulary was a household climate. Words for scolding, blessing, food, weather, and people’s characters arrived with a music that textbooks rarely capture. Some were Kannada standard; many were local, comic, or gently merciless.

You remember the sound first. A particular way of saying “come eat.” A nickname that stuck for decades. A proverb deployed at the exact moment you thought you were clever.

Language as inheritance

When those words fade, a texture of belonging fades with them. Writing them down — even a short personal glossary — is cultural work disguised as nostalgia.

Ask your elders for three words they think young people no longer use. You may get a dictionary, a memoir, and an argument about pronunciation. All three are gifts.
